I was tempted to use one of the 711 areas which deals with user orientation
of libraries, but decided after studying the book that it was more a report
on trends in today's libraries in the United States.
I wasn't sure whether the title Cutter or the editor Cutter should come
first. Since the title is the main entry, I gave it precedence.

I was about to use the classification for Diaries in Eng. lit. (PR908,
PR1330) when I happened to notice that the History category had a section
for memoirs and even included individual names. Since Pepys was among the
names, that convinced me!

Dewey no.: 001.5 (Knowledge-Cybernetics)
S416 (Cutter for title)
The classification schedule suggested the use of the Science number with
the standard subdivision 014 for language. I decided that it was referring
more to terminology in science than dissemination of material in science.
["Cybernetics"?! Terminology is a bit too esoteric for me...]
LC no.: Q223 (Communication in science [that was easy enough...])
N37 (This wasn't so easy - I decided that National Academy etc.
was the main entry rather than the committee)

I wasn't entirely satisfied with these categories, even though the author
mentioned that he was writing a philosophy... The book seemed to be a theory
of science history and what factors influence its progress. I looked briefly
at the headings Science--Social aspects and Science and civilization, but they
treated the impact of science on society and civilization rather than vice versa.
The closest I could get was the combination of philosophy and history.

This was another problem. There were categories for the individual elements
touched upon in the book under HC79 (eg. .E5 Environmental policy, .T4
Technological innovations, .W4 Wealth) I decided that the general history
category was better since it was more all-encompassing.

I disagree that the second heading is inappropriate for this book. The
cross references seem to cover the topics treated by the various chapters.
Dewey no.: 690.8028 (Residential buildings-techniques, procedures, apparatus, etc.)
F219i (Cutters for Farallones & title)
LC no.: TH4812 (Buildings-Houses. Dwellings-General special)
F37I5 (LC Cutters for main entry & title)
This was frustrating. First of all, I could see very little difference
between the Technology class TH4805-4850 (Building: construction with reference
to use. Houses. Dwellings) and the Architecture class NA7100-7600 (Domestic
architecture. Houses. Dwellings) It presented a good case for the coin flip method
of cataloguing. I finally decided on the TH class since it emphasized use (as
opposed to structure in Architecture), which was more in keeping with the nature
of the book. The subheading "General special" seems to be a contradiction
in terms.
